TWRC Wildlife Center
2019-Year in Review
From TWRC Executive Director Mary Warwick

Hello TWRC Members,

2019 was a great year for TWRC Wildlife Center and for me, personally. I was fortunate to be hired as the new Director in October.  Cheryl Hoggard, DVM also joined the TWRC Wildlife Center team to assist us with our medical needs. Earlier in the year the 2nd Annual Run Wild Run Free 5K run was another huge success thanks to Anja Machado, our previous Director, and our events committee. Our photo calendar was also a big success thanks to Jeannie Gresko.
And thanks to you, we had another successful year of donations. We can’t do the work we do at the center without your generous help of your time and financial support.

Thank you for all you do!

Mary Warwick
THE NUMBERS

TOTAL ADMISSIONS: Our Center admitted 4,514 animals from 150 different species for care in 2019.

ONSITE ANIMAL CARE PROGRAM (ACP): In the second year of the combined Onsite Animal Care Programs, ACP admitted and cared for 38 different species of mammals and birds, totaling 1363 animals, in 2019.

TOTAL VOLUNTEER HOURS: 15,000

BUDGET:
As with 2018, we began 2019 with a balanced budget. This would not have been possible without the generous support of our members, donors and private and corporate sponsorships. We always strive to not spend more than we take in but there are many variables in our business. We never know from year to year how many animals will be admitted. This, of course, affects all of the other aspects of our business. The more animals we take in, the more medications we need, the more supplies we need, the more wages we have to pay to care for the animals, etc. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between admissions and donations so that affects our bottom line. Rest assured that we are always trying to find ways to save money. We're always looking for ways to reduce our medication and supply expenses without sacrificing quality of care that we give to each and every animal we admit.
EDUCATION:
Education is a big part of our mission and focuses on fostering a love of the environment and promoting good stewardship of our natural resources and Texas wildlife. Our aim is to help people of all ages understand more about the world around them; their impact on it, and its impact on them. Our hope is that they will then be inspired to act in ways that will help preserve our natural resources.

Our education team logged 6,765 miles and 679 hours to spread our message to the greater Houston-area population. They reached a whopping 8,242 people during the year.
H-E-B CRITTER CREW:
With a generous donation from H-E-B, we developed a new education program.
With this funding, we will be taking our educational outreach program on the road to 25 underserved schools in and around Houston. The program is meant to reach schools and students that wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to see live wild animals or learn about their importance in our environment.
5K RUN:
On September 25, 2019, we held our 2nd Annual 5K run at Nottingham Park in Houston. We had 72 runners and many more that came just to observe. click the link below to see photos of the event.
Photo Contest:
We had another successful online photo contest in 2019. We received great photos of Texas wildlife and nature scenes. The winners were chosen by votes cast by the public. The winners had their photos featured on a 2020 calendar available for sale to the public. We’ll let you know when we start accepting entries for the 2021 contest.
